When reading the current media, it gives the impression that digital art and digital art collecting are new phenomena. However, digital art has had its place in the art and collecting landscape for decades. Indeed, collectors have been acquiring video, audio and time-based art since the mid-20th Century, all of which are considered to be forms of digital art. More recently, the term has come to include works created by, and in the realm of, VR and AR and NFTs. It is these novel forms of digital art that have captured the attention of a new breed of collector and the media alike.

With the global happenings over the past months, there has been an accelerated shift to an even more digital lifestyle. This, coupled with the rise of digital currencies and a further acceptance of digital assets, has led to increasing attention on digital art, particularly related to NFT works. The NFT boom has highlighted a group of creators that use elements from animation and gaming to create works, and has set record prices in the ranks of the most expensive art ever sold, surpassing most prices of “traditional” and also “traditional digital” artists. With this new way of art creation, distribution and provenance, a fully new structure is developing – from marketplaces to galleries and other intermediaries. And, of course, what LARRY’S LIST has always been focusing on, this evolving structure includes a new group of collectors that, not always but often, originate from the tech, crypto and gaming industries.
With this backdrop of developments, the intention of the Digital Art Collector Summit is to discuss collecting digital art in a wider context, including NFTs but also beyond. We see this as a chance to bring digital art in its wide range to the full collector community, as it has often been rather niche particularly in regard to the market. We want to create a conversation and exchange between “traditional” collectors and a new cohort of collectors. We want to share the excitement and possibilities that occur for collectors engaging in a “new” area, while also highlighting the fascination of digital art that is not necessarily linked to blockchain. Furthermore, we want to address the technology potential that plays a crucial part in the uniqueness and further development of digital art. While the focus is on art collectors, the discussions will also include artists, curators, and intermediaries.
The 2-day conference stands in LARRY’S LIST’s tradition of hosting high-caliber conferences on art collecting and private art museums, which we have been organising since 2017 from Basel to Hong Kong. Past conferences have featured prominent speakers and experts, including Tom Hill, Willem Van Gogh, Patrizia Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, and David Chau.
