New original work painted live
Known for her painting performances, Rokkaku will create on livestream a new original work as the basis of this limited print edition, opening up access for collectors and art lovers to engage with her creative process. Rokkaku will travel to London to paint live in the historic setting of Old Sessions House, while Avant Arte will livestream the whole painting process on avantarte.com on Wednesday 23rd November. As soon as Rokkaku’s fingers touch the blank canvas, the 24-hour countdown will begin. Art lovers will be able to watch her paint live from anywhere in the world and to purchase the corresponding print edition. This way, art collectors will enjoy a unique experience of witnessing how the artist creates her incredibly sought-after work, besides owning a limited-edition print.
Interesting artistic practice
Pursuing the childhood freedom, Rokkaku applies paint with her hands directly on the chosen medium, such as canvases, torn cardboards, and used Louis Vuitton suitcases. Innocent, imaginative and dreamlike, her works are composed of manga-inspired figures in a naive style. She also takes inspiration from Japan’s kawaii culture, which directly translates as “cute” but now encompasses a broad cultural aesthetic – from Hello Kitty to streetwear.
A promising talent
A self-taught artist, Ayako Rokkaku, (b. 1982, Chiba, Japan) is without doubt a promising talent, whose works first rose to prominence in 2006 when she won the Akio Goto Prize at Takashi Murakami’s Geisai #9 Art Fair. Since then, interest in her art has skyrocketed, and her works are much in-demand among collectors, particularly in Asia. In May 2022, a new record was set for her work when a painting was sold at Christie’s for $1.3m USD. Currently living between Berlin, Porto and Tokyo, she has had solo exhibitions in various international institutions. In 2015, one of her artworks was also exhibited at the Swatch Art Pavilion during the 56th Venice Biennale. Her works are part of the collections of the Danubiana Meulensteen Art Museum, the Voorlinden Museum, the Gunma Museum of Art, the Sehwa Museum of Art/Sehwa Art and Culture Foundation, and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Karuizawa.
