On 24 September, Christie’s held its fifth year of autumn sales in Shanghai dedicated to artworks by Asian and Western contemporary masters and emerging artists. The two sales achieved a combined total of RMB 98,580,000, a 35 per cent increase from last year, with Zao Wou-Ki’s 24.12.2002-Diptyque (2002) becoming the most expensive work of art to be sold in Christie’s Shanghai— a large work which was consigned from a European collection and has never before been on the market and was sold for RMB 33,600,000 including the premium. Eléphant du triomphe by Salvador Dalí recorded the highest price for a Western work of art sold in Christie’s Shanghai when it was sold for RMB 13,200,000. Returning for another successful season, the FIRST OPEN sale was met with strong sell-through rates of 85% by lot, realising a total of RMB 15,432,000. 40% of lots exceeding high estimate. The top lot of the sale was Untitled, by Zao Wou-Ki, which sold for RMB 1,680,000. You can find results of the two sales here: FIRST OPEN | Shanghai and 20thCentury & Contemporary Art.
