LARRY’S LIST and CUPPAR together present “ART INSIGHTS—China in Focus”, with a diverse range of topics and perspectives on contemporary art in China through interviews with artists, collectors, and art museums.
The first video, “Anchors in Flux” focuses on three 70s artists: Liu Xiaohui, Song Kun, and Wang Guangle. As “Young Chinese Artists” born in the late 70s, these three artists’ highly personal and intense aesthetic styles have matured and become more passionate with the evolution of the times. Their creations have also undergone their own rise and fall. Twenty years as full-time artists is neither too short nor too long. In the midst of the changing tides of the Chinese art world, their stories are thought-provoking.
The current attitude towards Chinese contemporary art is changing, with post-70s and 80s Chinese contemporary artists beginning to form the art scene. In 2014, American art critic and curator Barbara Pollack astutely captured the rise of a generation of Chinese artists in the secondary market that is rewriting the global narrative of contemporary art — callingthem “Young Chinese Artists” (YCAs). As they have matured and developed over the last decade, YCAs are increasingly building their influence among art institutions and collections.
“The closer we get to our own time, the harder it is to tell what is a timeless classic and what is an ephemeral trend.”
YCAs are a generation of artists who are free from the domination of collectivism over the individual spirit and liberated from socialist realism. They have developed their own style in the flux and have shone over time. Their works are full of philosophical reflections on the nature of art, shattering the prejudiced myths and misconceptions of Western art history about Chinese contemporary art.
